The Carnitine Miracle

This article is not so much a review of The Carnitine Miracle as it is a
tribute to the man who wrote it, Robert Crayhon, MS, CN. Crayhon was a nutritionist who Charles Poliquin respected and who helped him form many of his ideas about eating well to improve the quality of your life and athletic performance.

Crayhon was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, in 1961. He earned a master’s degree in nutrition from the State University of New York and became a certified clinical nutritionist. Later he moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he practiced. Along the way, Crayhon founded Crayhon Research and was a co-founder of Designs for Health, a nutritional supplement company.

Poliquin was introduced to Crayhon in 1998 when his friend Jennifer Workman, author of Stop Your Cravings, convinced him to attend a seminar Crayhon was giving in Los Angeles. Poliquin said it was one of the best pieces of advice he ever got. Crayhon’s talk also attracted two of Poliquin’s colleagues, popular nutrition author Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., and Milos Šarčev, a bodybuilder who placed in the top 10 of the Mr. Olympia.

Another Poliquin connection was Mark Schauss, author of Victory over a Toxic World. Schauss would later work with Poliquin in the field of lab
testing. Here is what Schauss said about Crayhon is a 2010 article that appeared in HerbalGram: “He so wanted to impart his knowledge to
others that he spent hours and hours learning so that he could share what was out there in the world of nutrition with as many people as possible. His greatest achievement was the number of people he inspired to help others.”

Poliquin said that one of Crayhon’s greatest achievements was founding Boulderfest in 1997, a seminar where the greatest minds in nutrition would
give lectures attended not just by nutritionists but other health care professionals such as medical doctors, naturopaths, and acupuncturists.

Crayhon taught Poliquin about the relationship between carnitine and the absorption of Omega 3s, how zinc can treat eating disorders, and the value of biological dentistry. He also impressed upon Poliquin that if a nutritionist takes something away from a client, they have to give them something back. As Poliquin would say, “Most nutritionists are full of Don’ts! but will not provide Do’s in exchange!” You’ll find many more such gems in Crayhon’s books.

The Carnitine Miracle goes beyond just talking about the numerous health benefits of the super nutrient carnitine, an amino acid that helps convert fat into energy. It also describes Crayhon’s eating plan that has many parallels to the Paleo Diet.

Robert Crayhon died on September 4, 2010, from colon cancer. But thanks to his teachings and writings, his legacy of how to eat to achieve optimal health will live on.
