Dr. Alfredo Herrera: The Soviet Weightlifting Project

Learn first hand about the Soviet weightlifting system! Dr. Herrera completed his Post Doctorate in the Soviet Union in Theory and Methodology in sports Training and Physical Education and Weightlifting at the State Central Institute in Moscow (Russia). His Doctoral degree was completed at Pedagogic Science from the State Central Institute of Physical Culture in Moscow, USSR (now Russia) where he was a part of the many studies and research strength coaches still used to support training theories even today. He has a degree in physical education from Manuel Fejardo University in Havana, Cuba.
Dr. Herrera was a guest of Poliquin’s at a Strength Summit to lecture on the Russian system of training as well.
The project will start with a seminar at the Training and Education Center in Colorado Springs where Dr. Herrera will introduce everyone to the systems and methods used in the Soviet system. There will be equal amounts of lecture and training*.
After the seminar, you will be a student of Dr. Herrera. He will be taking the group through an entire macrocycle of programming, culminating in a testing day where students will report their progress.
Communications through the program will be handled both via FaceBook and through email for those with no social media account. Students can post videos of their lifts and Dr. Herrera will comment on technical mistakes to be corrected. Questions will be gathered and answered once during every phase as well.
He has conducted seminars around the world and taught at prestigious universities. At Cuba, the president of the Technical Committee of the Cuban Weightlifting Federation, where he actively engaged with the training of coaches and athletes. He was also a member of the International Weightlifting Committee.
He has worked with many famous Olympic Champions including Pablo Lara of Cuba. He has coached the Colombian National Team, culminating in Maria Urrutia’s Gold medal win at the 2000 Olympic Games.

*Ideally, students will want to have had some experience with the Olympic lifts, but it will not be necessary to be able to appreciate the Soviet system and how it produces results.
