Cheat Right with Military Presses

The military press was a standard strength and mass builder in the early days of pro bodybuilding, and many of the champions in that era were great pressers. Bill Pearl who won the 1971 NABBA Mr. Universe title over past Mr. Olympia winner Sergio Oliva and future Mr. Olympia winner Frank Zane, military pressed 320 pounds!

If performed from a standing position, you can use your legs to (literally) push your strength and mass development to higher levels.

After you have completed all the reps you can in good form, use your legs to help you drive the bar upward so that you can complete a few more reps. On the last rep of these extended “push presses,” lower the bar slowly to emphasize the eccentric contraction of the muscle and increase muscle tension.

BOTTOM LINE: Use your leg drive during military presses to create additional fatigue and higher levels of tension on your muscles. (TSS)
